The
Great Barrier Reef Marine Parkin Australia is a marine protected area established by the Government of Australia to preserve and protect the well-known Great Barrier Reef from overdevelopment. It protects a large part of the Reef that even fishing is regulated and shipping has their routes to avoid sensitive areas of the park. The park is divided into management areas to aid in simplifying management such as Far Northern, Cairns/Cooktown, Townsville/Whitsunday, and Mackay/Capricorn. This is considered the world’s largest World Heritage Area stretching more than 2,000 kilometers and covering an area of 35 million hectares on the north-east continental shelf of Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world that can be found in the Coral Sea approximately parallel to the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia. This is known to be the only living structure that can be seen from the moon. The Reef was even declared a World Heritage in area 1981. It hosts a number of habitats where plants and animals naturally live. There are even different degrees of protection provided for these habitats. The Great Barrier Reef is home to an enormous number of species including dugong (Sea Cow), green turtles, varieties of dolphins and whales, more than a thousand species of fishes, different types of mollusks, sea snakes, and more than a hundred species of birdlife. Corals make up the various reefs which, in fact, are the primary reason for the great variety of the sea and animal life in the reef. Not all corals are hard because there are also some that are soft and spongy. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park also has a group authorized people who are in-charge of protecting the coral reefs as well as other habitats, looking after proper waste disposal, reef walking and even collecting protected turtles and sea birds.
